General
Takumi is the main character of Initial D and becomes well known as the "Akina's hachi roku" after his first race with Takahashi Keisuke from the Akagi RedSuns. From then on, teams from other areas of Japan have been challenging him to downhill battles. He learned to drift from delivering tofu to a hotel by Lake Akina and from his boredom while doing the job. Delivering everyday is a boring job and to make it more interesting, he tries to drive as close to the guardrail as possible (something he never thought was dangerous). Plus, he also tries to get home as quick as possible. Add those two up, and you somehow get a drift. Since he makes his deliveries at 4AM in the morning, no one has noticed that such a skilled driver existed in Akina.
Personality
Takumi always looks out of it and bored, but he's not as brainless as he looks. He keeps most of his emotions inside except when he gets pissed off; then, you really don't want to be on his bad side. He is also the type that does not like to be told what to do. In the beginning, he looks as if he has no interest in racing, but he is actually very competitive and hates losing.
Friends and Family
The only family that Takumi seems to have is his father, Bunta. His father was also a street racer but now runs a tofu shop. He has been making Takumi deliver tofu to help the shop since he was in 7th grade. The legal driving age in Japan is 18, so he's really been driving illegally for 5 years.
Takumi's best friend is Itsuki, and his other close friends are Iketani and Kenji. When he was still in the soccer club, he was also friends with Mogi. After an incident, he quit, and they stopped talking. They "restored" their friendship and are now dating.
Racing
Car: Sprinter Trueno [AE86]Team: Project D (downhill driver)
Takumi races with an old Hachi Roku (AE86) that he uses for his deliveries. From Takahashi Ryosuke's observations, his car probably doesn't have any more than 150HP. With this, he falls behind on the straight aways but catches up at corners because he excels at cornering work. (He later gets a new engine that has more horsepower.) His secret on Mount Akina is the gutter on the 5 hairpins where he can turn outside of his tires' grip by dropping them in.
His competitive nature makes him a different person while racing. He has very good natural instincts and races on his senses rather than the knowledge of his car and surroundings. Takumi has the ability to adapt to changes in his car quickly and use it to its fullest potential. His reactions while driving are quick and can race well on courses he's never practiced or driven on before. By driving behind another driver, he can can recognize their style and follow their line or imitate their style. Although he drives best with his own car, he can also bring any FR car to its fullest potential. Takumi didn't join a racing team until Third Stage. As his passion for racing grows, he realizes his dream is to become a professional racer.
